November 4

  • 3 gunmen from Tripoli’s Bab el-Tebbaneh intercept a bus carrying workers from Bab Tebbaneh on their way back from Beirut and shoot them in the legs. Tripoli’s MPs and dignitaries condemn the incident.
  • Quarrels over Pamela Jawhari leave 4 dead and 3 injured in the town of Mastita, Jbeil.
  • The Free Patriotic Movement efforts yield the convening of the Eastern Christian Gathering and General Michel Aoun reiterates the importance of the Christian role in the east during his speech.
  • Mass held in Zahle on the 22nd anniversary of former MP Joseph Skaff’s death in the presence of the Lebanese Forces representative MP Tony Abou Khater and other March 14 MPs. Salim Aoun attends on behalf of the Free Patriotic Movement and Elie Skaff asserts his alienation from all political alignments. Hezbollah was not invited to attend the mass.
  • The Higher Islamic Council convenes at Mohammad-al-Amine Mosque, Downtown Beirut, in the presence of caretaker PM Najib Mikati and former PM Fouad Seniora and decides to extend its own term by one and a half years calling on Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani to resign to “preserve the unity of Muslims.”

November 6

  • MP Walid Jumblat tells LBC’s Kalam el-Nass that he is still a centrist, adding that he is against the formation of a fait accompli government and urging people to forget about Hezbollah’s weapons.
  • Student elections at the American University of Beirut result in the victory of the Free Patriotic Movement, the Amal Movement and Hezbollah who were allied with the Progressive Socialist Party in 4 faculties out of 6.
  • The Governor of the North refuses to approve the march that the Jabal Mohsen residents were planning toward the An-Nour Square in Tripoli to protest against sedition.
  • France’s First Lady ValerieTierweiler arrives in Lebanon to take part in a series of social and cultural activities.
  • On the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Institute of Judicial Studies, President Michel Suleiman reiterates that justice must strike again with an iron fist and urges parties to desist from boycotting and disruption.
  • Caretaker PM Najib Mikati calls for a parliamentary session to define the jurisdictions of a caretaker Cabinet.
  • State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Sakr Sakr takes legal action against former MP Ali Eid and his bodyguard for hiding a wanted suspect in Tripoli’s twin bombings case. He also files another lawsuit against Soukaina Ismail for facilitating the entry of the cars from Syria.

November 7

  • Head of the Loyalty to Resistance Bloc, MP Mohammad Raad brands former ISF Chief, Ashraf Rifi, as being a militia man who used to cover up the smuggling of weapons to Tripoli’s militias and into Syria.
  • AUB mourns the death of student Marwan Hamzah who fell from the 5th floor at the university; suicide rumors spread after his death.
  • President Suleiman receives PM-designate Tamam Salam who asserts that he will patiently continue to hold on.
  • Speaker Nabih Berri discloses during Wednesday’s Parliament session that Israel has set up spy stations and surveillance cameras near the border town of Kfarkala.

November 8

  • Caretaker Minister of Interior and Municipalities Marwan Charbel meets the religious and political dignitaries of Tripoli at the residence of Mufti Sheikh Malek Shaar to discuss the security plan of the city and asserts that the security forces shall not be a “false witness”.
  • First Investigative Military Judge Riad Abou Ghaida summons former MP Ali Eid for questioning over Tripoli’s twin bombings.
  • The Loyalty to Resistance Bloc accuses the Future Movement of interference in the Syrian crisis.
  • In a first of its kind ice-breaking move, 4 Future Movement MPs meet 4 rivals from the Free Patriotic Movement in Parliament to discuss the relationships between the two blocs. Keeping the channels of communication open is the only agreement reached during the meeting.
  • Future Movement Secretary General Ahmad Hariri responds to remarks made by MP Mohammad Raad by saying “we will not surrender to the will of puppet soldiers serving the Syrian-Iranian troops.”
  • The Lebanese judiciary starts investigations into the Head of the Higher Relief Committee, Ibrahim Bashir, and his transfer of public funds to the tune of USD 10 million to his private account in Russia.

November 9

  • The PM-designate Tamam Salam assures that the Future Movement is not plotting against him.
  • Hezbollah supporters stage night protests over the episode of Basmat Watan’s TV show, which aired a skit with a Hassan Nasrallah imitator.
  • The Head of the Higher Relief Committee, Ibrahim Bashir, denies the allegations against him and holds Suheil Bouji, the Secretary-General of the caretaker Cabinet, accountable for framing him.
  • March 8 Forces win the AUB elections in Beirut and March 14 Forces win in Jbeil.
  • National polio vaccination campaign begins in Lebanon.

November 11

  • Sunni Sheikh Salem al-Rafei proclaims Sheikh Ahmad Al-Assira as a leader for the Sunni in a speech delivered in front of the survivors and the families of victims of Tripoli’s twin bombings. MP Mohammad Kabbara urges the referral of the crime to the Justice Council.
  • Refaat Eid holds a press conference where he accuses the Information Branch of framing his father in the twin bombings case and targeting Jabal Mohsen in particular. He adds “The Information Branch shed our blood and therefore we regard the shedding of their blood as halal (permissible)”.
  • Former MP Fares Soueid holds a press conference to reiterate his opposition to the blocking of Qartaba road, wondering whether or not Hezbollah supports road-blocking.
  • “He, who once appealed against the extension of Parliament’s term could never accept the extension of his own,” says President Michel Suleiman.
  • Beirut’s Marathon kicks off with runners from at least 36 countries.

November 12

  • President Michel Suleiman meets King Abdallah Bin Abdul Aziz in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the presence of former PM Saad Hariri. The attendees underscore the need to maintain stability and the Saudi King reiterates the Kingdom’s willingness to assist in relieving the burden of Syrian refugees.
  • Head of the Higher Relief Committee, Ibrahim Bashir, and his wife arrested and referred to the financial public prosecution over their alleged embezzlement of public funds.
  • The Parliamentary Committee on Media and Communications holds a meeting to discuss the spy devices set up by the Israelis and urges serious action to address these violations.

November 13

  • Two gunmen on a motorcycle shoot dead the pro-Hezbollah Sunni Sheikh Saadeddine Ghiyyeh in Tripoli. Hezbollah’s Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah says the assassination is aimed against the resistance and deplores the lukewarm reaction to the attack.
  • Lawyer Hoda Eid, sister of Ali Eid, hands the First Investigative Military Judge Riad Abou Ghaida a medical certification citing health reasons to justify her brother’s inability to appear in court and calls for the release of his driver Ahmad al-Ali.

November 14

  • Former PM Fouad Seniora deplores the assassination of Sunni Sheikh Saadeddine Ghiyyeh in Tripoli.
  • Hezbollah’s Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah appears in person in front of his supporters at the Sayyed al-Shouhada compound and says that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is preventing the formation of government.
  • “We won’t take part in any political operation that covers up for Hezbollah and facilitates its entry into Syria,” says former PM Saad Hariri in response to Nasrallah’s speech.
  • Financial public prosecutor Judge Ali Ibrahim files a lawsuit against the Head of the Higher Relief Committee, Ibrahim Bashir, and his wife for embezzlement of public funds and money laundering. The owner of Vaocau Company, Hussein Fawaz, and his wife were also charged together with the two suspects, and all four were referred to the Investigative Judge in Beirut.

November 16

  • Hezbollah’s Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah appears in person during a religious ceremony held in the Southern Suburbs on the Day of Ashura and asserts that he who ties the formation of government to Hezbollah’s withdrawal from Syria is flogging a dead horse, adding that the party does not need any cover from anyone for its weapons or presence in Syria.
  • In response to Nasrallah’s speech, former PM Saad Hariri holds Hezbollah responsible for the intervention in Syria and all its spillovers into Lebanon.
  • President Michel Suleiman sponsors the launching of the book on the visit of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to Lebanon.
  • Iranian Ambassador receives MP Suleiman Frangieh who brands the Intelligence Branch as a mistrusted militia and accuses it of fabricating the allegations against previous MP Ali Eid.
  • Individual clashes in Aisha Bakkar, Beirut, leave 4 injured.
  • The detainees over Abra’s incidents moved from Rihaniyeh Military Prison to Jezzine Prison and a delegation of their families visits MP Bahiyah Hariri to thank her for her efforts.

November 18

  • The March 14 coalition candidate, George Jreij, elected as the new head of the Beirut Bar Association at the Justice Palace following victory against his March 8 rival Fadi Barakat. The tally was 2664 against 1439 out of a total 4794 votes.
  • 20,000 Syrian refugees flock from the Syrian town of Qalamoun into Arsal for fear of potential strikes.
  • Tripoli’s security plan launched amidst clashes between the army and gunmen in Bab el-Tebbaneh. The plan stipulates the deployment of 500 members of the Internal Security Forces in Bab el-Tebbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.
  • General Michel Aoun announces from the Sagesse University that the Taef Accord is not a solution but a fraud designed to reinforce the grip of foreign countries on Lebanon.
  • In a speech during the Baabda Declaration Forum at the Phoenicia Hotel, President Michel Suleiman calls on introducing the Baabda Declaration into the constitution.
  • Bahia Hariri and the Islamic Jama’a hold a large meeting at the Marj Zouhour Mosque in Hasbaya in the presence of Taymour Jumblat, representing the Progressive Socialist Party, in order to reject strife and prevent its transmission from Syria to Sheba’a and Hasbaya.

November 19

  • Internal Security Forces deploy in Jabal Mohsen and Bab Tebbaneh.
  • A delegation from the Free Patriotic Movement and another from the Phalanges Party hold talks in Parliament as part of the former’s initiative to end the political deadlock.
  • Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani receives the Iranian Ambassador Ghadanfar Rukun Abadi to Lebanon.
  • President Michel Suleiman arrives in Kuwait to attend the Arab-African Summit.
  • Minister of Energy and Water Jobran Bassil holds petroleum discussions with Speaker Nabih Berri and Caretaker PM Najib Mikati and LF leader says “we want clean hands to extract oil.”
  • 255 Syrians depart from Lebanon for Hanover; they are the fourth batch of refugees accepted by Germany.

November 20

  • Two suicide bombers explode themselves in front of the Iranian Embassy in the Jnah area in Beirut, injuring 147 people and killing 25 others including the Iranian Cultural Attaché. The al-Qaeda –linked Abdulla Azzam Brigades claim responsibility for the attack in a voice recording by Sheikh Sirajeddine Zureiqat who was arrested by the Lebanese Army but then released a year ago.
  • The Future Bloc demands the referral of the Jnah attack to the Justice Council and views in Nasrallah’s words and Hezbollah’s deviations a threat to the existence of Lebanon.
  • The Lebanese Army arrests 14 Syrians and Algerians in the fringes of Arsal.
  • President Michel Suleiman warns from the implications of Lebanon’s refugee crisis in his speech during the Arab-African summit.

November 21

  • The Highest Defense Council convenes in Baabda and condemns the attack against the Iranian Embassy.
  • Speaker Nabih Berri adjourns parliamentary session until December 18.
  • Iranian officials, including Iranian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Hussein Amir Abdel Lahyan, accept condolences over the death of the bombing victims. Britain’s Ambassador to Lebanon Tom Flitcher shows solidarity by offering condolences at the Iranian Embassy.
  • Rumors suggest that the two suicide bombers had entered Lebanon a few days earlier and checked into a hotel in Verdun as tourists.
  • The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia condemns the attack against the Iranian Embassy in Beirut and all other terrorist attacks.

November 22

  • In his speech on the eve of the Independence Day, President Michel Suleiman addresses the Lebanese saying “this independence cannot be realized with parties who decide to dissociate themselves from the notion of the state.”
  • The Lebanese army dismantles a car booby trapped with about 400 kilograms of explosive materials on the main road between the towns of Younin and Maqna in the Beqa’a Valley, north of Lebanon.
  • Sources report that the suicide bombers who blew themselves up near the Iranian Embassy spent Monday at the Four Points Hotel in Verdun and the Lebanese Army circulate the photo of a fugitive linked to the bombings.
  • Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati meets his Turkish counterpart in Turkey and urges the reconsideration of the refugee file because Lebanon has grown incapable of accommodating them.
  • President Michel Suleiman, MP Suleiman Frangieh, Minister Mohammad Safadi and delegations from the Future Movement and the PSP extend their condolences at the Iranian Embassy.
  • The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia urges its nationals to leave Lebanon.
  • March 8 and March 14 Forces win equal seats at the USJ student elections and the Lebanese Forces commends the progress it has made from last year.

November 25

  • A military parade marks the ceremony held at the Chafik Wazzan Avenue on the 70th anniversary of Lebanon’s independence in the presence of President Michel Suleiman, Speaker Nabih Berri, Caretaker PM Najib Mikati and PM-designate Tamam Salam.
  • DNA test results reveal the identities of the two suicide bombers who targeted the Iranian Embassy in Beirut. The first is a Lebanese from Saida named Moueen Abou Dahr and the second is a Palestinian named Adanan Mohamad. Both were born in 1992 and are said to have been supporters of Sheikh Ahmad el-Assir.
  • During a speech at Biel marking the 77th anniversary of the establishment of the Phalanges Party, former President of the Republic Amine Gemayel says that Hezbollah is exposing itself and Lebanon to what’s beyond their endurance capacity.
  • Speaker Nabih Berri arrives in Iran for an official visit.
  • Kidnappers of Mohammed Salman Chmostar call his family from a Syrian number and demand a ransom of USD 2 million.
  • Minister of National Defense Fayez Ghosn affirms on Al-Jadeed TV the presence of Al-Qaeda members in Lebanon.

November 26

  • Disputes erupt between pro-March 8 and pro-March 14 students at St. Joseph University in Beirut in the wake of the student election results. The quarrel began following the comments sprayed on the university walls in support of Habib Chartouni. MP Sami Gemayel urges the university’s administration to assume its responsibility and LF Leader Samir Gegea says that they will not be responsible for what happens next if no actions are taken to curb the provocations. The university administration announces the suspension of classes.
  • Speaker Nabih Berri continues his visit to Iran and meets his counterpart Ali Larijani and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, hoping that the Iranian-American agreement will bring about internal agreements.
  • MP Walid Jumbat refuses to link between the attack against the Iranian Embassy and Hezbollah’s activism in Syria, asserting the presence of Al-Qaeda in Lebanon.
  • Bkerki Patriarchate media senior Walid Ghayyad denies the rumors claiming that Patriarch al- Rai intends to resign in order to take over the post of Cardinal Leonardo Sandri at the Vatican.

November 27

  • Lebanese Customs’ agents beat journalist Riad Kobeissi and Al-Jadeed TV crew after denying them entry to interview the Customs’ Director General. The journalists were working on a report about corruption among customs officials at Beirut’s International Airport and used a megaphone to heckle customs officials outside their heavily guarded offices around noon. The security forces release Kobeissi and his colleagues after interrogating them.
  • The repercussions of the St. Joseph University incident continue and MP Hassan Fadlallah accuses March 14 Forces of instigation, refusing the slogans maintaining that the St. Joseph University is Bachir Gemayel’s university.
  • Minister of Energy and Water tells As-Safir that the bids for oil and gas exploration will be held even if the Cabinet fails to convene.
  • Maronite Patriarch Mar Bechara Boutros Al-Rai returns from Rome, denying any intention to resign.
  • General Michel Aoun urges PM Najib Mikati to leave premiership.
  • STL Trial Chamber to hold a hearing on December 2.
  • PM Najib Mikati meets the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Laurent Fabius in France.
  • MP Suleiman Frangieh announces during a talk show appearance with Kalam el-Nass that President Michel Suleiman has backstabbed him stressing that the neutral government is unlikely to see the light.
  • Customs’ officials strike after clash with journalists in protest of what they believed to be an offense against the Lebanese Customs.
  • President Michel Suleiman urges the pertinent authorities to resolve the Custom’s controversy.
  • PM Najib Mikati heads for Qatar for one day and meets Qatari Prince Tamim to discuss the relations between the two countries and the need to support Lebanon in facing the burdens of the Syrian refugees.
  • Speaker Nabih Berri returns from Iran and reveals that he did not mediate to reconcile the differences between Iran and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  • Tensions flare up again at the St. Joseph University causing suspension of classes.
  • A Syrian national threatens to blow himself up at the Lebanese University’s Faculty of Letters and Humanities in Zahle and the security forces arrest him.

November 29

  • The military committee of Tripoli’s custodians of blood claim responsibility for the gunfire against 4 Alawi workers, stressing that the attack is a retaliation to the offenses committed by Ali Eid.
  • The judiciary continues its investigation into the Customs’ incident.
  • Parliamentary committees brief foreign ambassadors and Lebanese politicians on the recently established Israeli spying stations along its border with Lebanon.
  • Palestinian PM Rami Hamdallah visits Lebanon and meets Lebanese officials to discuss the conditions of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.
  • The College Protestant Francais school evacuated over false alarm in connection with bomb threats targeting the Saudi Embassy.
  • Ali El-Hajj Hassan, nephew of Lebanese Minister of Agriculture Hussein Hajj Hassan, dies along members of Hezbollah during fighting in Syria.

November 30

  • The Army Command- Directorate of Orientation uncovers and detonates 3 Grad rockets set to be launched in Al-Qaa’.
  • Salafist parties and organizations headed by Sheikh Dai Al-Islam Al-Shahhal block Al-Masnaa road to hold Friday prayers in protest of the arrest of some Salafist members.
  • Jabah Mohsen’s inhabitants stage protests in support of the Arab Democratic Party.
  • Caretaker Minister of Interior and Municipalities Marwan Charbel promotes Acting ISF Chief Brigadier General Ibrahim Basbous to the rank of Major General.
  • Ceremony held in Dbayyeh in commemoration of the death of President Rene Mouawad in the presence of Minister Gaby Layyoun who represented General Michel Aoun.

December 1

  • 6 dead and 50 injured in the 18th round of Tripoli’s clashes.
  • PM Najib Mikati visits Greek Orthodox Patriarch John Yaziji X and reassures him that progress on freeing both kidnapped bishops in Homs is being made.
  • Acting State Prosecutor Judge Samir Hammoud refers the lawsuit file by Al-Jadeed TV to the Military Court.
  • The residents of Temnin pressure Syrian refugees into removing their tents after a group of Syrians raped a mentally-challenged teenage boy from the town. The coroner’s report denies all rape allegations.
