The number of registered voters in 2013 stood at 3 463 116 compared to 3 266 074 in 2009, i.e. up by 6% or 197 042 voters. Muslims constituted 62.1% of the total voting population in 2013 compared to 60.3% in 2009, while for the same period Christians accounted for 37.9% compared to 39.7% previously.

Among the additional 197 042 voters this year, 181 000 amounting to 92% of the increase are Muslim. This trend has been prevailing for years as illustrated in the following Table 1. In 2005, the registered voters equaled 3 001 732, a number which rose to 3 463 116 in 2013, i.e. up by 461 384 voters of whom 83.5% or 384 838 were Muslim.

The increase in the number of eligible voters by sect from 2005 until 2013 has varied as follows:

• Sunni: 178 192 voters, i.e. up by 22.4%
• Shia’a: 172 911 voters, i.e. up by 22%
• Druze: 28 694 voters, i.e. up by 17.4%
• Alawi: 5 041 voters, i.e. up by 22%
• Maronite: 30 469 voters, i.e. up by 4.6%
• Greek Orthodox: 20 933 voters, i.e. up by 9.1%
• Greek Catholic: 13 595 voters, i.e. up by 8.9%
• Armenian Orthodox: 2892 voters, i.e. up by 3.3%
• Armenian Catholic: their numbers dropped by 706 voters, i.e. down by 3.5%
• Other Christians: 9400 voters, i.e. up by 11.3%
