Death rate goes up, birth rate slides
Over the past years, the population growth in Lebanon has been negative due to the decline in births and the increase in deaths. During the years 2009-2021, the number of births and deaths amounted respectively to 1,133,708 and 330,273, i.e. an increase in population of 803,435 people.
The following table, which illustrates the number of deaths and births during the period from 2009 to 2021, leads us to conclude the following:
- Between 2009 and 2017, the Lebanese population has grown annually on average by 66,338 persons, a number that decreased to 51,604 during 2018-2021, i.e. a 22.2 percent decline.
- In 2021, Lebanon saw a sharp decline in births and an increase in deaths.
- If the number of registered Lebanese is estimated at 5.580 million, then the annual population growth has declined from 1.46% to 0.6%.
- From 2020 to 2021, the death rate has increased by 21% while the birth rate has dropped by 8%, declining dramatically since 2019. The average annual increase was 66,438 births over the period 2009-2018. It decreased to 46,353 births during the years 2019-2021, i.e. a decline of 30.2% or 20,085 births.
- The population growth increased by 1.46% in 2010 before gradually decreasing to 1.1% in 2017 and 0.6% in 2021.
