Impact of economic crisis and Coronavirus on Lebanon’s demographics
The economic-financial crisis that has gripped Lebanon since end of 2019, along with the outbreak of COVID-19 in February 2020, have left serious repercussions on the population demographics.
By comparing 2018 (when conditions were normal) to 2021, we find the following:
- Marriage rate has declined by 7.2% or 2,626 cases.
- Divorce rate has dropped by 3% or 244 cases.
- Birth rate has significantly declined by 32% or 29,827 births. The Lebanese population has registered an increase of 67,360 persons in 2018 and 28,405 persons in 2021, not to mention the substantial increase in the number of travelers and immigrants (approximately 80,000), which if persists, will lead to an aging Lebanese population.
- The death toll has seen a sharp rise of 35.6% or 9,128 deaths, mainly due to the outbreak of Corona pandemic as about 7,600 persons may have been died from it.
