Fuel price hike induces an irregular increase in fares

Gasoline and diesel prices, which have respectively risen by 65% (from LBP 77,500 to LBP 128,200 per 20 liters) and 69% (from LBP 58,500 to LBP 98,800 per 20 liters) have led to a great increase in taxi, minivan and bus fares. And since the government has not set the official pricing, the operators are charging the fare according to their whims. The following table shows that until Wednesday, August 25th, 2021, the increase has ranged between 40% and 114%.

The number of passenger public transport vehicles is distributed as follows:

  • Taxi cars: 33,256 (with some of them not in use).
  • Minivans: 4,225 (14 seats and below).
  • Buses: 1,977 (more than 15 seats).
