Parliament Term and Presidential Election

If parliamentary elections are to be held on May 6, 2018 as scheduled → the new Parliament’s term will expire on May 20, 2022 →   the President’s term will expire on October 31, 2022 (after 5 months and 11 days).

Some might therefore argue that the current Parliament’s term might be extended until end of 2018 in order for the new Parliament to elect the President of the Republic.

It is well known that the new president is elected at least one month or at most two months prior to the end of the former president’s term, i.e. starting August 30, 2022. 

Parliamentary elections are also held during the 60-day period preceding the end of Parliament’s term, i.e. starting March 20, 2022. 

Thus, it may be logical not to extend the current Parliament’s term and to hold parliamentary elections on time. If the new Parliament “fits the current political realities”, then its term will be extended until the election of the President. If not, parliamentary elections will take place starting March 20, 2022 and the new Parliament will elect the President starting August 30, 2022.
