State Employment in 2014-69% Muslims vs. 31% Christians and Narrowing diapsrities in higher grades

Grade 1 Posts
According to Article 95 of the Lebanese Constitution, the principle of sectarian representation in public service jobs shall be cancelled except for Grade 1 posts and their equivalents which will be distributed equally between Muslims and Christians without reserving any particular job for any sectarian group. While equality is being respected in this grade, the commitment not to assign specific posts for specific sects is not. The BDL Governor position for instance is reserved for the Maronites and so are the positions of Army Commander and Director General of Finance. On the other hand, the post of the Internal Security Forces Director General is reserved for the Sunni and those of the General Security Director General and the Lebanese University President for the Shia’a. This has led some sects to perceive themselves as disadvantaged because, although all the said posts are within the same grade, some of them have a much more powerful standing.

Employment in 2014
In 2014, 24 employees were hired in public service jobs in the state’s administrations including 70 Christian employees, accounting for 31% of the total. The remaining 69% were Muslims as illustrated in Table 1. In addition, 1223 university professors were employed, of which the Christians accounted for 48% and the Muslims for 51%.
