Military expenditures
- USD 1.6 trillion was the global military spending in 2010.
- 1.3% was the global annual increase in military spending in 2010, compared to an annual average increase of 5.1% between 2001 and 2009.
- 2.8% was the average rate of increase in the US military spending in 2010 compared to an annual average increase of 7.4% between 2001 and 2009. Despite this slowdown the 2010 global increase remained entirely down to the USA, which accounted for USD 19.6 billion of the USD 20.6 billion.
- 2.8% was the average rate of decrease in Europe’s military spending in 2010.
- USD 111 billion was the military spending in the Middle East in 2010, an increase of 2.5% from 2009. The largest absolute rise in the region was by Saudi Arabia.
- 5.2% is the estimated military spending increase in Africa in 2010. It was lead by major oil-producers such as Algeria, Angola and Nigeria.
- Military expenditure refers to all government spending on military forces and activities, including salaries and benefits, operational expenses, arms and equipment purchases, military construction, research and development, and central administration, command and support.
