Karim Series (Karim Back to School - Karim Watching TV) - Sandrine Deredel Rogeon-By Sandrine Deredel Rogeon. Arabic translation by Maher Mehiou. Second edition published by Dar El-Maaref in 2009.
Karim Back to School
Karim was very happy with his new school bag, which bore his name. However, he became upset when he saw that his friend’s school bag had the colors of his favorite soccer team. He thought that his classmates would now laugh at him and tried to hide. Suddenly, he heard his friend Sami crying because the stitches of his colorful bag got ripped out and his pen case wouldn’t open. Karim consoled Sami by allowing him to borrow his pens and the two started drawing and coloring their favorite animals. Karim drew his dog Snoopy and Sami his cat Foufou. Later, the two teamed up to wipe away the red color which spilled over the bag. They also played with Karim’s ball and ate cheese during recess. Karim acted like a big boy throughout the day and Sami loved the surprises hidden inside his friend’s school bag.
“Sami: I love your surprise-filled school bag, Karim.
Karim: I do too. And I have another surprise for my teacher.
He then drew near Mrs. Nadia to reveal his surprise. “Here teacher. You may read us beautiful stories before we leave,” he said.”
Karim Watching TV
Karim loves watching cartoons on TV, unlike his mother who prefers that he plays with his friends and Snoopy, who used to hide the remote control. Majed came over to spend the day with his friend Karim, bringing with him a videotape, as requested by Karim. But the screen went blank and the boys had to go out and play in the garden with Snoopy. After rain started to pour down, Karim realized how much fun playing was and headed to his play room to continue playing with toys instead of watching TV.
“Finally, Karim sensed the joy of playing and the two went up to the toy room. He fixed a shoe box inside the castle and pretended it was a TV. We can watch TV here, Majed. Here you go. He then grabbed a calculator and used it as a remote control.”
The above stories underline the importance of team work and cooperation and teach children to share their things and belongings with love. They are recommended for children between 4 and 8 years old and include CDs enabling kids to watch or listen to the stories.
