Faitrouni: 680 members

This family is named after Faitroun, a Lebanese town located in the Qada’a of Kessrouan, 30 km from Beirut, at an altitude of 1400 m above the sea level with an entirely Maronite population.

The Faitrounis are predominantly Shia’a settled in the Hermel-Baalbeck area:

• Shia’a: 200 members in Hermel, 100 in Baalbeck, 90 in Nabi Naam, 40 in Al-Qasr and 35 in Hosh Tal Safiya.
• Sunni: 140 members in Al-Beddawi, north Lebanon and 20 in Al-Mazraa, Beirut.

Mazboudi (Al-Mazboudi): 255 members

This family name is inspired from the town of Mazboud, which is situated in the Qada’a of Al-Shouf, 45 km from Beirut at an altitude of 400 m above the sea level and has a predominant Sunni population.

The Mazboudis are Sunni settled in Mazboud (50 members), Mazra’a (65 members), Ashrafieh (15), Ras Beirut (80), Msaytbeh (34) and Zqaq El-Blat (10).

Mazboudi is among the rare families who still have members settled in their towns of origin, Mazboud in this case.

Bkassini (Al-Bkassini): 110 members

This family name is derived from the Bkassine town of Jezzine, which is 65 km from Beirut at an altitude of 800 m above the sea level and has a Maronite majority and a few Greek Catholics (5%).

The Bkassinis belong to the Maronite community and are present in the following three towns of Batroun: Wata Hob (80 members), Beshtoudar (20 members) and Bchatine (5 members).

Hamati (Al-Hamati): 330 members

This family name is ascribed to the Hamat town of Batroun, which is 55 km from Beirut at an altitude of 300 m above the sea level, with a Greek Orthodox resident population.

The Hamatis, majority of whom are also Greek Orthodox, are distributed as follows:

• Greek Orthodox: 110 members in the Bousit town of Zgharta, 15 in Al-Qebbi, 15 in Qalhat, 20 in Rmeil, 20 in Al-Mina and 25 in Al-Saifi, Beirut.
• Greek Catholics: 15 members in Burj Hammoud.

Hrajli: 630 members

The Hrajlis were named after the town of Hrajel in the Qada’a of Kessrouan. Hrajel is situated 45 km from Beirut at an altitude of 1350 m above the sea level and is populated by Maronite families.

The Hrajlis though belong to the Shia’a community and are predominantly in Bint Jbeil (570 members) with a minority in Al-Bashoura, Beirut (50 members).

Qaraouni (Al-Qaraouni): 780 members

This family is named after the town of Qaraoun located in Western Beqa’a, 80 km from Beirut, at an altitude of 900 m above the sea level, with its resident population being mainly Sunni (85%). Qaraoun also has a number Greek Orthodox and Catholic families.

As for the Qaraounis, they are distributed by sect and region as follows:

• Shia’a: 150 members in Kafra (Bint Jbeil), 110 in Al-Bazourieh (Sour) and 310 in the neighborhoods of Al-Manara, Al-Msarwi, Al-Hussainiyi and Al-Jame’e.
• Sunni: 35 members in Majdal Anjar (Zahle) and 125 in Al-Rawda (Western Beqa’a)
• Greek Orthodox: 43 members in Hay El-Maalaqa (Zahle).
