- On the 26th anniversary of the death of his brother Rashid Karami, former PM Omar Karami calls for an emergency government and a national convention because dialogue is yielding further divides.
- The Presidential Palace opens its doors for citizens starting this Saturday and the first Saturday each month.
- Former Future Bloc Minister Mohammad Chatah tells Al-Liwaa that the involvement of Hezbollah in the fighting in Syria forced the Future Bloc to accept the postponement of elections.

June 5
- Tripoli’s MPs and dignitaries hold a meeting at the residence of MP Mohammad Abdul Latif Kabbara who urges the Lebanese Army to cease the fights in 48 hours before Tripoli’s residents rally up to defend themselves. Kabbara accuses the Lebanese Army and President Suleiman of sympathizing with the militants.
- The Future Bloc describes Hezbollah as a squad within the Iranian Revolutionary Guards stressing that it supported Parliament’s term extension for fear of political void.
- Mayor of Arsal, Ali Houjeiry, shows up before Investigative Military Judge Fadi Sawan for testifying in the Arsal incident, after having failed to attend earlier.
June 6
- President Michel Suleiman urges the Public Prosecution to file a lawsuit against MP Mohammad Abdul Latif Kabbara for accusing him and the Lebanese Army of conspiring with the militants against the residents of Tripoli.
- Baalbeck and its vicinity come under shelling from Syria.
- A Syrian helicopter fires missiles on the Beqa’a town of Arsal.
- The Gulf Cooperation Council advises Arabs not to travel to Lebanon.
- The Lebanese Army Command reveals a security plan aimed at stopping the fights of Tripoli.
- The President, the PM and the Army Commander attend a security meeting at the Presidential Palace in Baabda and the Lebanese Army reiterates its support to a ceasefire in Tripoli.
- Founder of the Salafist movement in Lebanon, Sunni Sheikh Dai al-Islam al-Shahhal, urges Sunnis to engage in military action in opposition of Hezbollah and the Iranian Safawi scheme.
- During a speech he delivered at the inauguration of Wissam All-Hassan’s Park, retired Major General Ashraf Rifi says that the investigation into the Al-Hassan assassination has come a long way.
June 8
- Units of the Lebanese Army enter into clashes with militants in Tripoli and confiscate large quantities of hidden weapons in Bab El-Tebbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.
- The Lebanese Army urges the Lebanese not to be fazed by rumors and reveals that it will fight fire with fire.
- Former PM Fouad Seniora lashes out at Hezbollah branding the party as a tool manipulated by Iran and not sparing the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Adnan Mansour, from his criticism.
- President Michel Suleiman meets ambassadors of the member states at the Security Council and urges them to assist Lebanon as it can no longer endure the repercussions of the Syrian exodus.
June 10
- Supporters of the Lebanese Belonging Movement headed by Ahmad Al-Asaad stage a protest outside the Iranian Embassy in Beer Hassan in disapproval of the involvement of Iran and Hezbollah in the war in Syria. The protest concludes with the death of the Adloun resident Hachem Salman who was shot by an unknown man.
- The Lebanese Army finishes the removal of barricades in Tripoli and continues its crackdown on armories.
- Former Beirut MP Adnan Araqji dies of medical malpractice as reported in a number of newspapers.
- Around 120 injured rebels transferred from Al-Qusayr to hospitals in the north of Lebanon, escorted by the Lebanese Army.
- The Saudi Embassy in Lebanon urges Saudi nationals to comply with the GCC’s call and leave Lebanon.
- President Michel Suleiman meets ambassadors of the member states at the Security Council and calls on their countries to support Lebanon in bearing the burden of the Syrian refugees.
- LF leader Samir Geagea urges the PM-designate Tamam Salam to form a government in one week or withdraw and give way to someone else.
June 11
- President Michel Suleiman receives Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon and demands punishment for the assailants who attacked the Lebanese protesters outside the embassy. The ambassador denies any involvement by the embassy in the incident.
- A bomb reportedly targeting a van carrying Hezbollah members to Syria explodes at the International Road between Chtoura and Al-Masnaa.
- The GCC announces its plan to take action against Hezbollah members targeting their residency permits and their financial and business activities.
- MP Walid Jumblat says that holding the elections under current circumstances is close to suicide as cited in Al-Hayat newspaper.
- Hezbollah allies in Bayt Jaafar and Al-Boustan ban the passage of a Red Cross ambulance rushing to transfer a number of injured from Al-Qusayr to North Lebanon, thus forcing the ambulance to change its route. Hezbollah hands later a few of the injured to the Red Cross.
- Public Prosecutor Judge Hatem Madi reaches the retirement age of 68 and hands over his post to Judge Samir Hammoud.
- MP Assem Qanso reports that he had a two-hour meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad.
- Judge Ali Ibrahim files a lawsuit against 3 employees at the Customs for bribery and embezzlement of public funds.
- “The admission of all the injured Syrians is beyond the capacity of Lebanon’s hospitals,” says Minister of Public Health Ali Hassan Khalil.
June 12
- 9 missiles launched by Syrian militants land in Hermel, causing injuries to civilians and damage to buildings.
- The Constitutional Council fails to convene due to lack of quorum (8 members) caused by the absence of two Shia’a members and 1 Druze.
- 3 people injured in an armed clash between the Future Movement allies and the Islamic Piety Association in the Abou Shaker neighborhood of Tareeq Jdideh.
- The Economic Committees hold a meeting in Beirut’s BIEL exhibition center to warn against the deteriorating economic conditions.
- General Michel Aoun slams the paralysis of the Constitutional Council and wonders who has authorized the ministries of social affairs and public health to admit injured Syrians and where will they, in particular the armed members among them, go after they finish their treatment.
- Head of the Loyalty to Resistance Bloc, MP Mohammad Raad, visits President Michel Suleiman ending a months-long rift and the latter urges Hezbollah to limit its intervention in Syria.
- The shooting of Ali Al-Houjeiry, a resident of the town of Arsal, in Hermel results in rising tensions in Arsal and its vicinity.
June 13
- A Syrian helicopter bombs areas near Arsal’s municipal building under the pretense of chasing fleeing Syrian gunmen. President Michel Suleiman condemns the attack and the Lebanese Army promises stern measures aimed at curbing the recurrence of such attacks.
- Shia’a and Druze members continue their boycott of the Constitutional Council session.
- The US Embassy tweets that the Constitutional Council should look into the appeals raised far from any political intervention, stressing that the boycott of the Council’s session leads to further erosion of democracy and reflects disrespect towards Lebanon’s institutions.
- The Lebanese Army Intelligence chases a member of Al-Nasser family accused in the killing of Ali Houjeiry in Arsal.
- MPs quote speaker Nabih Berri as saying: “Some want the elections to instigate strife and the members boycotting the Constitutional Council have deterred this strife”.
- The Baalbeck municipal treasurer Ali Solh is found dead near the ruins of Baalbeck with two shots in his head.
June 14
- Former PM Saad Hariri slams Nasrallah stating that Hezbollah has subjected Lebanon to an external threat and that it has a destructive agenda that only attends to the interest of Iran. Hariri adds that Nasrallah has become the head of the state and the commander of the armed forces.
- President Michel Suleiman demands the Minister of Foreign Affairs Adnan Mansour to petition to the UN Security Council against the Syrian violations in Lebanon.
- Patriarchs Al-Rai and Yaziji urge from Bkerke the release of the two bishops abducted in Syria and recommend neutrality toward the conflict unfolding there.
- During his appearance on LBC, MP Suleiman Frangieh rules out the possibility of holding elections in 2014 and suspects that Lebanon might be heading for war. He also views the Baabda announcement as a Sunni-Shia’a arrangement at the expense of the Christians.
- Minister Wael Bou Faour engages in verbal skirmishes with the Free Patriotic Movement members over the Syrian refugee crisis.
- The First Investigative Magistrate in Beiut, Judge Ghassan Oueidat, closes investigation into the Al-Madina Bank case, which dates back to 13 years.
June 15
- Hezbollah’s Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah announces on Injured Fighter Day that the engagement of Hezbollah in Syria’s war was a strategic decision that came only after other Lebanese parties took part in the conflict. Nasrallah urges self-restraint and condemns the killing of Hachem Salman near the Iranian Embassy.
- Former PM Saad Hariri fires back at Nasrallah saying “we haven’t sent any fighters to Syria.”
- Decree allocates LBP 20 billion for the High Relief Committee to compensate the residents of Tripoli for the damages they sustained during the clashes.
- General Michel Aoun reports that Hezbollah has prevented the transition of fighting from Syria to Lebanon, stressing that he is against any armed intervention in Syria.
- Sheikh Ahmad El-Assir calls for the armament of the Sunni poor.
- President Michel Suleiman signs the pay scale draft law and refers it to Parliament.
June 17
- Tensions rise in Arsal following the killing of 4 members of the Jaafar and Amhaz families. Arsal residents deplore the crime and Hezbollah assures that condemnation alone is not enough.
- Patriarch Al-Rai attends the inauguration of Our Lady of Lebanon Basilica in the presence of President Michel Suleiman, PM-designate Tamam Salam and a number of ministers and MPs. Al-Rai holds March 8 and March 14 Forces accountable for the juncture that Lebanon has reached.
- Speaking to Al-Akhbar, LF leader Samir Geagea reiterates his support of President Suleiman’s patriotic stances and urges PM-designate Tamam Salam to form a government in two weeks maximum or pass the mission to someone else.
- FPM supporters hold virtual elections in Ashrafieh in protest of the legislature’s term extension. The elections were supposed to be held on Sunday, June 16.
- In a speech delivered at the inauguration of a tourist resort in Byblos, President Michel Suleiman lashes out at his adversaries asserting that no one can isolate the President of the Republic or skew his patriotic views.
- Head of the Lebanese Belonging Movement, Ahmad Al-Asaad, holds from his residence in Hazmieh, Nasrallah accountable for the death of Hachem Salman and calls for a protest outside the Iranian Embassy on June 23.
June 18
- High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Catherine Ashton, arrives in Lebanon to discuss the conditions of the Syrian refugees.
- In his weekly statement to Al-Anbaa, MP Walid Jumblat calls for the formation of a national unity government that would move the disputes from the streets to the institutions.
- Following the Phalanges’ weekly meeting, MP Sami Gemayel states that Hezbollah is ruling the country by force with no permission or authorization.
- The arrest of two people under charges of affiliation with Al-Qaeda results in the blocking of the Cite Sportive-Taree Jdideh road. Protesters reopen the road after the release of the arrested.
June 19
- A car accident escalates into fierce clashes in Abra between the allies of Sheikh Ahmad El-Assir and members of Hezbollah and leaves 1 dead and 3 injured.
- President Michel Suleiman hands UN special Coordinator Derek Plumbly a memo on the violations committed by the Syrian regime and rebels against Lebanon’s territories.
- The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs concludes her visit to Lebanon without meeting the Minister of Foreign Affairs. She reiterates her support of Lebanon in the face of the Syrian refugees’ crisis and urges the rapid formation of a government.
- A March 14 delegation headed by former PM Fouad Seniora and consisting of 57 prominent figures hands President Michel Suleiman a letter demanding the retreat of Hezbollah from Syria and the deployment of the Lebanese Army on the border. Seniora reads the letter in Parliament and reiterates his support of the legislature’s term extension.
- Lebanese ministers and Arab and foreign ambassadors hold a meeting at the Grand Serail to discuss the plan proposed by the Lebanese government to address the Syrian refugee crisis.
June 20
- March 8 Forces criticize the memo handed by President Suleiman to the UN Special Coordinator. Speaker Nabih slams it as adding fuel to the fire and MP Assem Qanso accuses President Suleiman of treason.
- Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon, Ali Awad Ousseiri, says on Future TV that the KSA is not targeting the Shia’a alone, underlining that Hezbollah’s intervention in Syria has harmed the party itself, the Shia’a and Lebanon at large. Ousseiri adds that the Saudi measures are against all those implicated in supporting Hezbollah.
- MP Walid Jumblat undergoes surgery at the American University Hospital.
- Former singer Fadl Shaker threatens to slay Samih Zein, head of the Haret Saida municipality, and every member of Hezbollah and the Amal Movement in a statement he made on OTV.
- “The resistance has made a mistake and I am trying to save it from itself,” says President Michel Suleiman.
- Head of the Popular Nasserite Organization, Osama Saad, assures that a number of Syrians and Future Movement members participated in the fights alongside Sheikh Ahmad El-Assir two days earlier.
June 21
- President Michel Suleiman receives Lebanon’s Arab League ambassador and hands him a memorandum detailing violations to Lebanese territory by rival sides in Syria.
- A number of protesters block several roads in Al-Masnaa, Saadneyel and the Cite Sportive in Beirut in condemnation of what they called a siege on the town of Arsal.
- Civil society members stage a protest at the Riad Solh Square in rejection of the extended term of Parliament, which starts on June 21.
- Former minister and MP Michel Samaha appears before the military court but the judge postpones his trial until December 3, 2013 to re-notify Samaha’s alleged co-conspirators.
- The first batch of the Lebanese deported from Qatar and made up of 11 Shia’a, 7 Sunni and 2 Druze expatriates arrives in Beirut amid contradictory reasons. Some assured the expulsion was based on professional grounds while others ascribed it to security-related considerations.
June 22
- The Lebanese armed forces find a platform equipped with a Grad rocket set for launching in Ballouneh. The rocket launched earlier landed in the Arayya-Kehhaleh area after having cut the high voltage lines in the area. Conflicting information surround the intended target of the rockets.
- “Lebanon is facing a serious challenge that might threaten its unity,” Lebanese Army Commander Jean Qahwaji says while addressing a delegation of Druze scholars.
- President Michel Suleiman urges Lebanon’s Minister of Justice Chakib Qortbawi to take the measures necessary against MP Assem Qanso who had accused him of treason.
- The Constitutional Council fails to convene due to lack of quorum and Head of the Council Issam Suleiman prepares minutes on what happened to present them to the President and Prime Minister.
- Sheikh Ahmad El-Assir postpones his scheduled movement until after the official exams.
- Official Brevet exams kick off with around 63000 students sitting for the exams.
June 24
- Fierce clashes break out between the Lebanese Army and the proponents of Sheikh Ahmad El-Assir in Abra, Saida, leaving 12 Lebanese soldiers (the number grew to 18 later) dead and an unknown number of fatalities among Al-Assir’s lines. The Army ends up tightening its grip on the Bilal Bin Rabah Mosque, Al-Assir’s center of operations, and the Lebanese Army Command urges Saida’s dignitaries to announce openly on which side they are.
- Proponents of El-Assir express their support by blocking a number of roads in Tripoli, Saadnayel, Naameh and the Cite Sportive.
- “The deadly sin of Hezbollah does not justify the attack on the Lebanese Army,” Former PM Saad Hariri reports.
- Following his meeting with President Suleiman, PM-designate Tamam Salam announces his commitment with the 8-8-8 Cabinet formula and insists on the need for the political forces be represented according to their parliamentary size.
- The number of the Syrians registered with the UNHCR reaches 553 000 with another 80 000 still on the waiting list.
- MP Walid Jumblat reports that negotiations between the Lebanese Army and its attackers are out of question; stressing that Hezbollah members surrounded the residence of MP Bahiya Hariri in Majdelyoun.
June 25
- Caretaker PM Najib Mikati announces today as a National Day of Mourning commemorating soldiers whose lives have been lost in recent clashes.
- The Lebanese Army takes full control of El-Assir’s center of operation bringing the clashes to an end and the radical Sunni scholar flees with former singer Fadl Shaker and a number of proponents. The military judiciary issues arrest warrants against El-Assir, Shaker and 123 members implicated in the attack.
- Following their meeting at the Grand Serail, former PMs and current PM-designate Tamam Salam reiterate that the Lebanese Army holds no particular grudge against the Sunni community, stressing their backing for all those who sense inequity in the application of law.
- Former PM Saad Hariri reiterates in a TV appearance his support for the Lebanese Army and calls for the withdrawal of all weapons insisting that General Jean Qahwaji should remain the head of Lebanon’s military institution.
- Patriarch Al-Rai slams all politicians as “executioners” and voices his solidarity with the Lebanese Army.
- Grand Mufti Mouhamad Rashid Qabani deplores the attack that targeted the Lebanese Army and rejects El-Assir’s call on Sunni soldiers to quit the Army.
- President Michel Suleiman holds a dinner banquet for LF leader Samir Geagea and his spouse.
June 26
- Minister of Interior and Municipalities Marwan Charbel, Army Commander Jean Qahwaji and former PM Fouad Seniora make separate tours over the beleaguered suburb of Abra.
- The Army Command- Directorate of Orientation- denies reports suggesting that the Army Commander Jean Qahwaji would have handed President Michel Suleiman his resignation if the army had been prevented from storming the security zone under the control of Sheikh Ahmad El-Assir.
- The Presidency of the Republic issues a statement underlining the confidence of
President Michel Suleiman and the Cabinet in the Lebanese Army and its leadership. - The Future Movement holds an exceptional meeting at the residency of MP Bahiyya Hariri in Majdaloun and calls on the Lebanese Army to remove all security pockets from Abra.
- Clashes flare up anew between the Zeaiter and the Hjoula families in Laylaki.
June 27
- Speaker Nabih Berri calls Parliament to session in order to discuss and approve pending draft laws including the extension of the term of the Lebanese Army Commander and the heads of security apparatuses.
- Several Syrians injured in a stabbing attack after their minibus was targeted by a group of pro-Assad Syrian assailants in the Jisr Al-Wati neighborhood.
- Following his meeting with former PM Fouad Seniora, the Mufti of Saida, Sheikh Salim Soussan, denounces the illegal practices undertaken by the Lebanese Army in Saida.
- Former ISF Chief Ashraf Rifi asserts to Future TV that the ISF have not distributed any weapons and the injuries that the Lebanese Army has sustained in Abra are beyond Al-Assir’s military capacities.
June 28
- Two bombs, allegedly targeting Hezbollah, explode in Zahle.
- Hezbollah vacates the disputed apartment in Abra and hands it over to the Lebanese Army.
- Brigadier General Roger Salem appointed as acting ISF Director General following the retirement of his predecessor Ibrahim Basbous.
- The Lebanese Army assures in reference to Hezbollah that it has fought in Abra unassisted.
- US Secretary of State John Kerry reiterates during a phone call with President Suleiman his support for the Lebanese Army.
- Minister of Social Affair returns to Beirut after having met PM Saad Hariri and a number of Saudi officials during his visit to KSA.
June 29
- The Mufti of Saida, Sheikh Salim Soussan attends prayers during which he renews his support for the Lebanese Army, urging them to stop their random arrests in the city.
- Sheikh Ahmad El-Assir’s supporters attempt to break into the security complex once occupied by the Sunni cleric, prompting the Lebanese Army to fire in the air to disperse them.
- A delegation headed by Fouad Seniora and MP Bahiya Hariri visits President Michel Suleiman to demand the referral of Saida’s recent incidents to the Justice Council.
- Acting General Prosecutor Judge Samir Hammoud submits a memo to the Minister of Justice Chakib Qortbawi demanding the lifting of immunity for MP Assem Qanso for accusing President Suleiman of treason.
- People rally in Tripoli and Tariq Al-Jdideh in support of Sheikh Ahmad El-Assir.
July 1
- President Michel Suleiman and PM Najib Mikati travel to Qatar on an impromptu visit to felicitate Qatar’s new Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on assuming his duties as the ruler of the country.
- General Michel Aoun assures on Al-Jadid TV that he will not attend parliamentary session or accept a prolonged term for the Army Commander.
- US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns arrives in Lebanon and starts off his meetings with MP Walid Jumblat.
- The Lebanese Forces announces its intention to boycott Parliament session and a heated debate flares up over the constitutionality of legislation under a resigned government. Speaker Nabih Berrir insists that the session is consistent with the constitution.
- Hezbollah’s Deputy Chief Sheikh Naim Qassem slams the Future Bloc as being the sponsor of strife.
