Kfarharra : Small in area and population

Location

Kfarharra is located in the Qada’a of Akkar in an area known as the “Douraib Al-Awsat”, 120 km from Beirut and 35 km from Tripoli. It is situated at 200 m above the sea level and stretches across a small area of 160 hectares. Kfarharra may be reached through Tripoli- Halba- Kousha.

Population

The registered population at Kfarharra is estimated at 500 people. The residents however do not exceed 200 and are distributed over 40 houses. The sweeping majority (93%) are Greek Orthodox with a small group belonging to the Maronite community (7%).

Voters

In 2013, there were 309 registered voters in Kfarhalla compared to 266 in 2009. Only 94 of those cast their ballots. The number of voters stood at 193 in 2000 with 47 casting their ballots. Kfarhalla’s voters are distributed over the following families:

  • Emari: 8
  • Jerjes: 7
  • Msawmai: 6
  • Tawil: 5
  • Hanna (Maronite): 15

Local Authorities

Kfarharra has no municipal council. The town’s authority is limited to a Mukhtar and a 3-member Ektiyarieh body.

Educational Institutions

Kfarharra’s official elementary school closed down in 2000 and students are now pursuing education in the neighboring towns, particularly Halba, Meniara and Deir Janin.

Economic Life

Residents of Kfarhalla depend on agriculture for their livelihood. In addition to growing olive trees, almonds, walnuts and vegetables, enrollment in the Lebanese Army constitutes another source of income for the population. Kfarhalla is also home to three commercial shops.

Problems

The migration of inhabitants in search of employment opportunities, water shortage and the absence of medical dispensaries are among the town’s most critical problems.
