September 3

• First Military Investigative Judge Riad Abou Ghaida issues arrest warrants against Sheikh Ahmad Al-Gharib and Mostafa Khoury over their alleged involvement in Tripoli’s mosque bombings. Judge Ghaida orders the release of Sheikh Hashem Minkara but his ruling faces appeal, forcing the suspect to remain in custody until the verdict of the Military Court of Cassation is rendered.
• Ala’eddin Borujerdi, chairman of the Iranian parliamentary committee for national security and foreign policy, arrives in Lebanon and meets Lebanese officials stressing that Lebanon’s security serves the stability of the region.
• Dar Al-Fatwa accuses a security apparatus associated with the Prime Minister’s office of fabricating false security reports against some Muslim scholars; the PM’s office refutes the accusations.

September 4

• Ala’eddin Borujerdi, chairman of the Iranian parliamentary committee for national security and foreign policy, continues his visit to Lebanon and meets President Michel Suleiman, PM Najib Mikati and Hezbollah’s Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah. He also visits the grave of Imad Meghnieh, announcing that a military strike against Syria opens door to all possibilities.
• Parliamentary Future Bloc renews its call on President Suleiman and PM Mikati to form a new government, slamming the accusation of takfiris as being a seditious theory.
• Maronite Patriarch Mar Bechara Boutros Al-Rai states that the pay scale in its current form will lead to the decline of certain schools and the closure of others, adding that it will also leave teachers jobless and parents defaulted on tuition.

September 5

• The Military Court of Cassation approves the decision to release Sheikh Hashem Minkara on parole.
• Patriarch Al-Rai receives President Suleiman at his summer residence in Diman and commends him for his stances. President Suleiman urges the withdrawal of Lebanon from the regional conflict.
• MP Nouhad Al-Mashnouq tells Internews talk-show on Future TV that a Syrian thug named Khodr Lotfi, hailing from the Syrian town of Rabli, is behind the explosion that rocked Al-Salam Mosque in Tripoli. He adds that the car that exploded in Ruwais came from Brital, accusing Syria of carrying out the attacks on Ruwais and Tripoli.
• The monthly statement issued by the Maronite Bishops calls on officials to exert every effort to form a government capable of protecting the people and the institutions.
• March 14 Forces general secretariat says that the Ruwais and Tripoli bombings are a sequel to the Syrian Samaha-Mamlouk scheme.
• Minister of Interior and Municipalities Marwan Charbel sponsors a reconciliation meeting between the Lebanese Army Intelligence and the Internal Security Forces following a clash between the two over the entry to and exit from the Serail of Saida. He also visits MP Bahoya Hariri.

September 6

• Lebanon’s General Security celebrates its 68th anniversary in the presence of President Michel Suleiman who praises the performance of the apparatus, adding that the resistance is in the service of the defense strategy.
• Following his visit to the Presidential Palace, PM-designate Tamam Salam announces that discussions on government formation are in progress and that there should not be cause for despair.
• Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Awad Asiri visits General Michel Aoun in Rabiyeh and former President Amine Gemayel in Bekfaya. The latter reiterates his refusal that diplomatic cars be stopped at Hezbollah checkpoints.
• Patriarch al-Rai receives Muslim scholars from Akkar and Tripoli at his summer residence in Diman.
• Ministry of Interior and Municipalities organizes a conference aimed at promoting the role of municipal police in assisting the security forces in maintaining stability.
• MP Khaled Daher holds a press conference in the presence of a man called Abou Mohammad An-Nashar who accuses Hezbollah of recruiting him to gather information on its adversaries in Tripoli.
• Retired Major General Ashraf Rifi urges the referral of Tripoli’s twin explosions and the car bombing in the Southern Suburbs to the Justice Council.

September 7

• US Ambassador to Lebanon David Hill initiates his diplomatic responsibilities after presenting his credentials and urges Lebanese parties, mainly Hezbollah, to halt their interference in Syria.
• The US evacuates non-emergency staff from the Embassy in Beirut.
• Syrian witness Mohammad Zouhair As-Seddiq appears on Al-Jadid TV accusing Hezbollah’s security official Wafiq Safa of involvement in Rafik Hariri’s assassination and Safa denies the allegations.
• Young protesters rally in front of the US Embassy in Awkar in condemnation of a possible military action against Syria.

September 9

• Armed clash erupts at a Hezbollah checkpoint at the entrance of Burj Al-Barajneh refugee camp leaving one Palestinian dead and others injured. Gunfight began when a Palestinian wedding convoy refused to stop at the checkpoint to be searched. A joint Hezbollah-Palestinian meeting assures later that the clash was personal.
• President Michel Suleiman meets his French counterpart in Nice, France, and the latter reiterates his support to the Lebanese Army.
• Sheikh Saadeddine Ghiyeh, a scholar with close ties to Sheikh Hashem Minkara and Hezbollah, is injured and rushed to hospital in Zgharta following the blast that hit his car in Tripoli.
• A man murdered and cut into pieces by his wife and two sons in the Southern Suburbs of Beirut Hay al-Sellom.
• Protesters take to the streets in Beirut and other regions in rejection of military action against Syria.
• Lebanon’s General Security arrests a Syrian near Beirut’s river for trying to manufacture explosives

September 10

• Pro-Assad figures hold a solidarity meeting at the Syrian embassy in Lebanon, stressing that they would not stay on the sidelines if Syria came under attack.
• May Arslan Jumblat, mother of MP Walid Jumblat, dies at 87.
• Minister of Information Walid Daouk urges both press and editors’ syndicates to take action against Ad-Diyar’s editor in chief, Charles Ayoub, for targeting PM Najib Mikati in his slanderous articles.
• 5 Syrians and 2 Lebanese admit to having launched the rockets that landed in Baabda while they were attempting to target the Southern Suburbs.

September 11

• Families of the Lebanese pilgrims kidnapped in Azaz stage a sit-in outside the residence of Speaker Nabih Berri in Ain El-Tineh to protest the detaining of their relatives.
• Special Tribunal for Lebanon announces the resignation of the Presiding Judge of the Trial Chamber, Robert Roth for personal reasons.
• Caretaker Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn approves a decree delaying the discharge of Brigadier General Edmond Fadel until March 20, 2014.
• LF leader Samir Geagea receives Saudi ambassador Ali Awad Asiri.
• President Suleiman addresses a delegation from the Alumni Association of the Faculty of Information and Documentation assuring that the government will be formed without a blocking third or a Saudi veto on Hezbollah.

September 12

• US Secretary of State John Kerry and President Suleiman discuss over the phone the situation in the region and the latter reiterates that Lebanon is opposed to any military action against Syria.
• The first batch of 107 Syrians out of 5,000,000 leave Lebanon to Germany.
• Public and political figures attend the funeral of May Jumblat Arslan, mother of Walid Jumblat. A Hezbollah delegation, the Sheikh Akl Talal Arslan Nasser Eddine El-Gharib, and Sheikh Naim Qassem are among the attendees.
• Minister of Interior and Municipality Marwan Charbel chairs a meeting for the Central Security Council to discuss new means for the promotion of protecting the embassies and the municipal police work. The meeting considers reducing the number of guards assigned to protect political figures.
• A Future Bloc delegation visits Patriarch al-Rai at the Diman and former PM Fouad Seniora announces that everybody has agreed to the Baabda declaration.

September 13

• A statement issued by the Presidency of the Republic clarifies the grounds for the Baabda declaration, pinpointing that the declaration has not addressed the resistance weapons and that all parties agreed to its content.
• Popular delegations pour into the office of Caretaker PM Najib Mikati in Tripoli to denounce the media campaign targeting him. Mikati stresses that he will launch an initiative to form the government next week.
• In a venomous letter lamenting the death of Walid Jumblat’s mother, former head of General Security Jamil as-Sayyed says: “I implore the mercy of God for her soul and his forgiveness for all sins that she accidentally or deliberately committed. It is not her fault that she made you as you are.”
• Kingdom of Saudi Arabia warns its citizens from travelling to Lebanon.

September 14

• A delegation representing Speaker Nabih Berri kicks out a series of visits to all parliamentary blocs to lay forth the dialogue initiative crafted by Berri.
• Former PM Saad Hariri praises the Baabda declaration as being a new roadmap towards stability.
• Former PM Fouad Seniora assures that his article published in Foreign Policy magazine did not call for military attack on Syria and that it was fabricated by Hezbollah.

September 16

• A delegation of Muslim scholars chaired by Sheikh Salem Rafei pays its first-ever visit to President Michel Suleiman and stresses the need to solve the issue of those detained during Nahr El-Bared incident.
• A number of political officials, including former President Amin Gemayel, Salim Hoss, Fouad Seniora, Tamam Salam, Najib Mikati and Michel Aoun pay Walid Jumblat condolences on the death of his mother, May Arslan Jumblat.
• The Bachir Gemayel Foundations holds mass in Bekfayya on Gemayel’s 31st commemoration.

• Caretaker PM Najib Mikati signs a decree authorizing the advance payment of LBP 1210 billion to cover the salaries of public sector employees.
• Zahle’s MPs hold a press conference asserting that Hezbollah’s telecoms grid will not pass in Zahle.
• General Michel Aoun announces the establishment of the National Front for the Protection of the Constitution from Rabiyeh in the presence of ministers, MPs and a number of legal and judicial figures.
• Security forces raid a warehouse of expired food products in the town of Basateen and arrest its owner.

September 18

• Berri’s Development and Liberation Bloc meets former President Amin Gemayel and LF leader Samir Geagea and the latter says that Berri’s initiative does not lead to tangible results.
• Syrian worker dies while preparing a 250 gram explosive device in Halat. Initial investigation suspects that he worked for the Syrian Intelligence but the ID card found later proves his connection to the Free Syrian Army.
• 3 wounded in armed clashes between Fatah Organization and Jund Al-Sham in Ain El-Helwi’s Refugee Camp.
• Residents of Labaa, along with advocates of the Free National Movement and the Lebanese Forces stage a protest against a school which was rented for the purpose of housing Syrian refugees.

September 19

• “My initiative aims at facilitating the formation of government,” says Speaker Nabih Berri during Wednesday’s parliamentary meeting.
• An STL delegation headed by Registrar Daryl Mundis arrives in Lebanon and meets caretaker PM Najib Mikati who highlights the difficulty of funding the tribunal in the absence of a government.
• General Michel Aoun receives a Hezbollah delegation including Hassan Al-Khalil and Wafiq Safa, in the presence of Minister Joubran Bassil.
• Against the increasing number of refugees and the decline in international aid, officials hold a meeting at the Presidential Palace to discuss the crisis. President Suleiman pledges to bring up the refugee controversy during his New York visit.
• First raindrops of the season fall in Lebanon.
• Minister of Justice Shakib Qortbawi announces that 35.7% of inmates are non-Lebanese, adding that the number of prisoners was 5343 on September 16, 2013.

September 21

• Families of the Lebanese pilgrims kidnapped in Azaz stage a sit-in outside the Turkish Airlines office in Downtown, Beirut, slamming Lebanon’s intelligence branch and threatening to escalate measures if Turkey fails to release the abducted. The ministerial committee in charge of the case asserts that the abducted are outside Azaz and are in good health.
• Minister of Interior and Municipalities Marwan Charbel announces that 2000 ISF members will be deployed in the Southern Suburbs as of Monday.
• Supporters of Sheikh Ahmad El-Assir stage a protest in front of Mohammad Al-Amin’s Mosque in Downtown, Beirut, against the arrest of one of El-Assir’s supporters by the army intelligence.
• LF leader Samir Geagea agrees in absentia to all the agreements reached during dialogue.

September 23

• President Michel Suleiman arrives in New York to attend the regular session of the UN General Assembly and seek support to enable Lebanon to accommodate Syrian refugees.
• The Southern Suburb’s Security plan set in motion today.
• Members of the Future Bloc and the Change and Reform Bloc boycott the Parliamentary session scheduled today.

September 24

• Hezbollah and residents of the Southern Suburbs hail the deployment of security forces in the area.
• In a speech broadcast on Al-Manar TV, Hezbollah’s Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah reiterates his opposition to self-security, adding that the Ruwais explosion was carried out by a takfiri group in the Syrian opposition in cooperation with Lebanese members. Nasrallah criticizes the role that the KSA is playing in the Syrian crisis as well as its stance against Hezbollah, announcing his willingness to engage in dialogue.
• Parliamentary session adjourned until October 21 due to lack of quorum and verbal skirmishes arise between MP Ali Bazzi and MP Ahmad Fatfat.
• The Criminal Court of the south acquits the Lebanese Forces members accused of abducting Muhieddine Hashisho in 1982.
• The pro-March 14 Free Decision Bloc turns a land belonging to the Lebanese Railway Authority in Karm Al-Zaitoun into a public playground, arguing that the Authority was planning to turn it into a parking lot.

September 25

• In his speech before the UN General Assembly in New York, President Suleiman reiterates Lebanon’s neutral stance toward the Syrian crisis, stressing that Lebanon is incapable of accommodating more refugees as the refugee population has grown to about one third of the Lebanese population. Suleiman meets Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs Saudi Al-Faisal, the Arab League Secretary General and US President Barack Obama who renews his support to the Lebanese Army and urges the protection of Christians in Lebanon.
• New clues in the investigation into the Ruwais explosion reveal that the car was laden with explosives in Arsal by a takfiri group headed by Omar Al-atrash.
• The Future Bloc views that Hezbollah’s approval of the deployment of security members in the Southern Suburbs is an indirect acknowledgement of the failure of self-security.
• Families of the Lebanese pilgrims kidnapped in Azaz renew their protest in front of the Turkish Embassy in Rabieh, threatening to escalate action against Turkish interests in Lebanon.
• General Michel Aoun says that every bloc has the right to choose its own ministers, otherwise let PM designate Tamam Salam form the government in agreement with the An-Nussra Front.

September 26

• President Michel Suleiman continues his visit to New York and holds meetings with Qatar’s Sheikh Tamim, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Iranian President Sheikh Hasan Rouhani and Turkish President Abdallah Gul.
• Following Wednesday’s parliamentary meeting, MPs quote Speaker Berri as saying that it is preferable to rule out a fait accompli government.
• Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Awad Asiri assures that the KSA does not veto anyone nor does it interfere in details pertaining to this matter.
• The New Yorker magazine reveals that Tehran was involved in Rafic Hariri’s assassination.
• Court ruling grants the Phalanges Party the right to use the name of the radio station Voix du Liban.
• Polish woman Ania Lisewska banned from entering Lebanon to sleep with Lebanese men, as part of her plan to have sex with 100,000 men across the globe.

September 27

• President Suleiman concludes his New York trip by meeting US Minister of Defense Chuck Hagel.
• MP Wali Jumblat says that the 8-8-8 cabinet formula needs to be reassessed.
• Former PM Fouad senior holds a 2-hour meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri in Ain Tineh and announces that their discussion covered the interest of Lebanon and the Lebanese.
• Minister Joubran Bassil, former Minister Elie Skaff, Tony Suleiman Frangieh and other Christian figures attend lunch banquet held by Former Deputy Speaker Elie Ferzli in what is considered a reconciliation gathering.

September 28

• Boat carrying migrants seeking asylum in Australia sinks off the coast of Java and 27 Lebanese hailing from towns in the region of Akkar drown in the accident. Migrants were planning to enter Australia illegally.
• Meeting at the Grand Serail discusses a security plan for Tripoli similar to that enforced in the Southern Suburbs.
• President Michel Suleiman tells Tele Liban that he hopes everybody will comply with the Baabda Declaration, urging withdrawal from Syria and reiterating that he rejects any decision to extend his mandate.
• Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea holds a press conference urging rapid cabinet formation without ministers from March 8 and March 24 Forces.
• Trial of Nar El-Bared detainees kicks off in Roumieh and the Judicial Council adjourns the trial to January 17, 2014.

• Arsal’s Lebanese Army checkpoint intercepts a truck loaded with weapons and ammunitions on its way from Wadi Khaled to Syria.
• Investigative Judge Alaa Al-Khatib orders the dissection of the body of Rola Yaacoub, a woman beaten to death by her husband, to determine the cause of death.

October 1

• Adjournment of the trial of the three suspects arrested on charges of kidnapping the two Turkish pilots until October 10.
